Mafex, the Spanish railway industry association brings together 97 companies covering the entire value chain of the sector.

Mafex, the association representing the Spanish railway industry, which currently comprises 97 companies, including the main manufacturers of rolling stock and companies providing railway solutions and services, joins the “Freight belongs on rail” campaign.

Its adhesion to “Freight belongs on rail” shows the railway industry’s commitment to the decarbonisation of the transport sector, moving towards sustainable mobility and promoting the railway as a key way of transport in the fight against climate change.

In the words of Pedro Fortea, General director of Mafex, “the great challenge of the future is to tackle the negative effects of climate change and Spain must face it in a decisive way. One of the most obvious areas of action is transport. The government wants to reach a rail freight market share of 10% by 2030. However, this should not be the goal, but the beginning of a more ambitious journey that places the railway as the backbone of freight mobility. Initiatives such as ” Freight belongs on rail ” focus on this issue and on the opportunities offered by the railway. The commitment of our industry to this great challenge is absolute”.

With this adhesion, “Freight belongs on rail” reinforces its attempt to achieve a decarbonised and environmentally committed transport sector. The European initiative continues to raise awareness among both public institutions and companies, pursuing the combination of rail and road to reduce CO2 emissions.

The aim of the campaign is to reduce road traffic, protect the environment and reduce CO2 emissions with rail freight as a key ally. The same transport by rail emits 80% less CO2, replaces up to 52 trucks which means less congestion on motorways and roads and reduces external costs by up to 50%.

The campaign aims to halve CO2 emissions in the transport sector by 2030. In Spain we have had a 4% share of freight transport by rail for 15 years. This campaign is looking for allies to raise awareness among public institutions, companies, organisations that fight against climate change and society in general of the importance of increasing this share.

A campaign with strong support
