For the first time, the train exceeds road distribution in these facilities and shows the tendency of companies such as Volkswagen Navarra to choose sustainable transport routes. The car manufacturer, which broke the historical record for the transport of vehicles by rail in 2020, has reduced its emissions by 4,820 tons of CO2 with Transfesa Logistics.
Transfesa Logistics has helped Volkswagen Navarra reach its historical record for the distribution of cars by rail. For the first time, in 2020 the train has surpassed the road as a mode of transport in these facilities, reaching a share of 56% of shipments made.
In total, during 2020 there were 110,116 vehicles transported with Transfesa Logistics on 14 routes, a figure that represents more than 80% of all railway operations carried out in the past year. In our country, the destinations of these services have been Barcelona, Santander, Tarragona and Zuera (Zaragoza) while international shipments have arrived with Transfesa Logistics to Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
In these trips, when opting for the train, the emissions have been 1,046 tons of CO2, compared to the 5,858 that would have been reached when making the same trips by road (truck). Therefore, annual savings of 4,812 tons of CO2 has been achieved.
According to Igone Lecea Lacunza, VW group account manager at Transfesa Logistics, “this result has been possible thanks to the work and involvement of many people from both the Volkswagen Group and our own organization, which has been very committed to the customer and this factory’s needs specifically. Our goal for this year is to maintain this transport quota and work on new projects related to rail transport”.
For Isabel Núñez, environmental manager at Transfesa Logistics, “Volkswagen Navarra’s commitment to the train is a sign of our customer’s awareness to carry out a more responsible business model and contribute as much as possible to reducing the carbon footprint derived from its activity ”.
Núñez also recalled that promoting freight transport by rail is one of the main pillars of Transfesa Logistics, in line with its commitment to the 2030 Agenda and especially, with its SDG 13 “Climate Action”, an objective for sustainable development identified as a priority in the organization’s business strategy.
